Gesine von Papenburg (Emsland Series) 2024
This is one of my favourite recent paintings based on the Gesine von Papenburg which sails on the Northern Sea (Nordsee).
I was born up here in the North of Germany and though I grew up in Ireland I spent a lot of time here. Not by the sea, but inland near the moors, where it’s flat and the clouds are always interesting.
This series aims to capture some of the sights, sounds and smells of my childhood and time spent in a place which both changes and always stays the same. From the beautiful house of my fairy godmother in which we always stay since my grandmother died, to the trees and the river, the smell of the land and the taste of the cherries.
